ÒRÌSÀ

elemental spirit of
the yoruba religion

Legend has it that every 2000 years Olodumare appears to one person that has spent his life devoted to serving others to pick a man or a woman to become òrìṣà. The òrìṣàs are the emissaries of Olodumare, once chosen he or she will have to accomplish a divine mission before becoming òrìṣà. If the chosen are unable to complete their missions, they are bounded to the earth, and their spirits forever roam the afterlife.

On this particular night, a poor merchant was visited in his dreams; he was presented with the option of taking over one of the duties of Elegguá, Osanyìn, Obatalá, Orúnmila or Yemọja. Olodumare showed the merchant the worlds each òrìsà ruled over, and at the end of the journey, the merchant had to choose before the sacrifice is revealed.

ELEGGUÁ

guardian òrìsà of the paths and
portals between the worlds

He is the repository of ashé. Ashé is the energy that runs through all things. Elegguá is a child-like messenger and protector of the crossroads of the human and the òrìsàs worlds, his colors are black and white signifying his contradictory nature.

He is the closest to the Olodumare and nothing can be done in either world without his permission.

Elegguá is always appeased and called first before any other òrìsàs as he holds the keys to the door between the worlds.
