Abstract
Informal settlements, commonly called slums, are a major issue in third world countries and are becoming an even bigger problem due to the rapid urbanization of third world cities. Slums are essentially grouped into two types: slums on land and slums on water. Slums on either land or water are unique but face similar issues such as lack of access to sufficient water, sanitation, security of tenure, housing and green space.
My thesis investigates an architectural solution that anchors an isolated community back into its urban fabric while maintain the existing social cohesion.
My proposed site is Makoko, a water slum in Lagos that is one of the most populous cities in africa. the slum is home to over 100,000 dwellers. the goal of the design is to create a prototype for a small community within
a larger slum, that providing economy, basic needs, cultural connectivity and system integrations.
